I-95 Pawtucket River Bridge Replacement: School Street Exit Closure

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is scheduled to close I-95 North Exit 28 (School Street) on Monday, April 9, 2012. The closure is necessary to allow the Department to complete construction in the area of the existing School Street off-ramp that cannot be done while it is open to traffic.

This closure is the final step RIDOT needs to take before it can open the first span of the new Pawtucket River Bridge to traffic on I-95 North. RIDOT will then be able to lift the 18-ton weight limit that has required trucks and other large vehicles on I-95 North to use local detours or longer highway detours.

The closure will be in place for approximately two weeks, with the shifting of I-95 North traffic expected in late April.

RIDOT will establish signed detours using Exit 27 (Downtown) or Exit 29 (Broadway/Cottage Street). Scroll down for detour maps and turn-by-turn directions.

The closure will affect access to businesses such as Memorial Hospital and the Pawtucket Red Sox. These businesses attract large amounts of people, especially those from other parts of the state who are not familiar with driving in Pawtucket or the detours that have been in place to ongoing bridge construction.

At the end of the ramp, go straight onto Marrin Street

Continue straight onto Grace Street

Continue straight onto Division Street to reach School Street

Detour using Exit 29 (Broadway/Cottage Street)

Stay left on the ramp for Broadway

Turn left onto Broadway

Turn left onto Main Street and follow to return to School Street
