Will galvanized structural steel be an acceptable alternate to the metalized finish specified?
Answer:
Galvanized structural steel will be an acceptable alternate to the metalized finish specified. The galvanizing shall be required to conform to the current standard specification recently adopted by the Department. There will be no additional compensation for this item.

Question:
Will RIDOT consider limiting the Major Steel Bridge certification requirement to the Repair/Strengthening details shown on the contract drawings as Fracture Critical Members?
Answer:
The certification requirement will be for all fabrication of structural steel bridge elements except those specifically identified for fabrication under the Simple Steel Bridge certification.

803.9901 REMOVAL OF EXISTING SUPERSTRUCTURE calls for the trusses to be sent to "an approved off-site fabrication facility for rehabilitation of the riveted built-up trusses and the entire ornamental bridge rail system, including end posts." Sheet 7; STRUCTURAL STEEL NOTES: calls for THE SHOPS FABRICATING THE STRUCTURAL STEEL (EXCEPT FOR EXPANSION JOINT, RAILINGS AND BEARINGS), MUST BE CERTIFIED FOR "MAJOR STEEL BRIDGES (CBR)" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE AISC QUALITY CERTIFICATION PROGRAM OR EQUIVALENT. SHOPS FABRICATING THE EXPANSION JOINTS, RAILINGS AND BEARINGS SHALL, AT A MINIMUM, BE CERTIFIED FOR "SIMPLE STEEL BRIDGE STRUCTURED (SBR)". THE SHOPS SHALL ALSO BE CERTIFIED UNDER THE AISC "SOPHISTICATED PAINT ENDORSEMENT (SPE)" QUALITY PROGRAM OR THE SSPC-QP3 PAINT CERTIFICATION PROGRAM. THE FABRICATOR MUST SUBMIT PROOF OF CURRENT CERTIFICATION AS SPECIFIED. It is the intent of the notes to have the riveted built-up trusses fabricated in a facility with the Major Steel Bridge certification.
