Question:
In regards to your answer on 4/22/20 pertaining to the temporary deck underside protective shielding and being included in the cost of the Concrete Deck Repairs (Full & Partial Depth) and calculating the number of square feet required, I provide the following example to show the difficulty figuring the SF required and why a bid quantity should be given since the specific concrete repair areas are not shown on the drawings. Example: on Bridge #74701, the girder spacing is 8'-6". If the repair area is 3'x3' and falls between the girders, the shielding area would be 8'-6" x 7'-0" (59.5 SF). If the 3'x3' repair area falls over a girder, then the repair area would be 17'-0" x 7'-0" (119 SF). Not having the repair areas shown, contractors could grossly over or under estimate the quantity, so for balanced bidding a bid item should be added to the contract.
Answer:
The limits of protective shielding indicated on Sheet No. 56 are the minimum requirements; additional shielding may be provided for the Contractor’s convenience. All protective shielding shall remain incidental to the cost of the repair.

Question:
Item #817.2112, REPAIRS TO STRUCTURE CONCRETE MASONRY - PATCHING MORTAR; the detail shown on Sheet 11 of 101 on the contract drawings states to chip minimum 1" deep, but shows not exposing the rebar, therefore a maximum depth of less than 2" deep. Is this detail correct and if so, are we to use this same detail when figuring Item #817.9903, Concrete Repairs to Bridge #744?
Answer:
As indicated in a note on Sheet No. 11, patching mortar concrete repairs are intended for areas where no more than on-half of the rebar surface is exposed and the surrounding concrete is sound; this would allow for depths slightly greater than 2”. All repair areas for the Georgiaville Pond Bridge No. 074401 are designated as patching mortar concrete repairs and this detail shall be utilized; payment, however, is included under Item Code 817.9903. See notes on Sheet No. 34 for items of work considered incidental to this item.

Question:
Sheet 11 of 101, Note 18; states that Galvanic Anodes are to be included in the cost of the 'Form and Cast In Place Concrete Repair', but these item are typically paid by the 'Each' since there is no way of estimating the number of galvanic anodes required until the repair to exposed, so we are requesting a bid item for the Galvanic Anodes.
Answer:
A pay item for galvanic anodes will be added to the Contract by Addendum.

Question:
Sheet 56 of 101, Note 3; states prior to any deteriorated deck repairs, the contractor shall install temporary deck underside protective shielding beneath the designated repair locations in accordance with Item Code 803.0500. It also, states the horizontal limits shall extend a minimum 2 feet beyond the limits of the repair and all cost associated with this shielding shall be included in the cost of the repair. 1. The contract provides a pay item 803.0500, Temporary Deck Underside and Side Protective Shielding, so please clarify the Note 3 on Sheet 56. 2. Does Note 3 pertain to Partial Depth Repairs? 3. If it is included in the Full Depth and Partial Depth Deck Repair Items, and since no deck repair areas are shown in the contract, how is one to figure the square foot area required for the protective shielding and the number of locations?
Answer:
The temporary deck underside protective shielding that is paid for under Item Code 803.0500 is shown on Sheet No. 9 of 101 and is for protection during removal of the ends of the deck; temporary deck underside protective shielding noted on Sheet No. 56 of 101 shall be installed in accordance with Item Code 803.0500 but will not be measured for payment but included in the cost of the concrete deck repairs. Temporary deck underside protective shielding shall be installed for all deck repairs (full depth and partial depth). The area of protective shielding for deck repairs can be estimated based upon the quantities included in the Contract for Item Codes 818.2010 and 818.2020 with an increase for the limits indicated in Note 3 on Sheet No. 56 of 101.

Question:
Sheet 53 of 101, Note 6; states payment for any excavation for the temporary jacking & shoring shall be included in the cost of temporary jacking & shoring unless otherwise designated within these plans. The contract does have a pay item for structural excavation at the pier columns for the repairs below grade where jacking & shoring will be placed. Please clarify if the structural excavation will be paid if the jacking & shoring is erected prior to the repair of the pier columns.
Answer:
The payment limits of Structural Excavation will be measured as described in Note No. 2 on Sheet No. 51 of 101; the payment quantity is not dependent on when the repairs are to be done. Any excavation required for the erection of the temporary jacking & shoring that is beyond these limits shall be included in the cost of the temporary jacking & shoring; no additional payment will be made for this work.
