The RIDOT Pavement Preservation Program is a proactive preventative maintenance process intended to extend the life of the state's existing roadways. The focus is on recently placed pavements (about five years), to hold conditions at an acceptable level before deterioration begins to accelerate. To this end, new technologies are constantly being sought out and evaluated. The program began in 1998 and to date has treated several hundred miles of roads — a significant percentage of the total mileage in Rhode Island. Methods used include rubberized asphalt crack sealing and chip seals, microsurfacing and paver-placed elastomeric surface treatments.
