We will completely replace the Park Avenue Railroad Bridge, which carries Park Avenue (Route 12) over Amtrak's Northeast Corridor between Elmwood Avenue (Route 1) and Wellington Avenue in Cranston. The bridge has been structurally deficient for many years and dates back to 1906.
The bridge was closed in mid-spring 2021 for demolition and reconstruction. RIPTA is running a free shuttle during the closure. We intend to reopen the bridge prior to the start of school in fall 2021.
To replace this bridge in as short a timeframe as possible, we are using early contractor involvement procurement method as well as accelerated bridge construction methods. Together, these steps will allow the Department to complete the project up to three months faster than using conventional methods.
Next week, overnight demolition of the wooden bridge deck is scheduled. As a reminder, the bridge remains closed to vehicles and pedestrians, with seven-day pedestrian access via a RIPTA shuttle from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
