Interstate Highway Restrictions


Route 37 West to I-295 North Ramp Closure – Cranston

Extended Weekend Closure: On Friday night, September 6, RIDOT will undertake a weekend-long closure of the ramp from Route 37 West to I-295 North for continued bridge construction as part of the Department's Cranston Canyon project.

The closure begins at 8 p.m. on Friday night and will end by 5 a.m. Monday morning, September 9. When the ramp is closed, motorists will follow a short detour by reversing direction at Route 37's intersection with Natick Avenue and following Route 37 East to its on-ramp with I-295 North. A detour map is available at www.ridot.net/DetourMaps.

Details for motorists and pedestrians:

  • The work on the September 6 weekend completes ongoing construction on the bridge carrying Route 37 over the bike path. A section of the Washington Secondary Bike Path will be briefly detoured.
  • Motorists using the ramp from I-295 South to Route 37 will need to come to a full stop before merging onto Route 37.

I-95 15 Bridges Project, Providence to Warwick

Providence: I-95, over Elmwood Ave., left lane closed for median barrier work, Sun. and Mon. nights, 8 p.m.-5 a.m.

Providence: I-95 South, over Elmwood Ave., two left lanes closed for striping, Tues. night, 8 p.m.-5 a.m.

Providence: I-95 South, before the Elmwood Ave. off-ramp (Exit 34), there will be a lane split with two lanes on either side of the split, Wed-Fri. All lanes go through.

Providence: I-95 South, at the Elmwood Ave. Bridge, lane closures possible to install median barrier, Wed. and Thurs. nights, 8 p.m.-5 a.m.

Providence: I-95, from Broad St. to Rte. 10, two left lanes closed (I-95 South), and the left lane closed (I-95 North), for bridge replacement Fri. night (Sept. 13) at 8 p.m.- Mon. morning, (Sept. 16) at 5 a.m. Please use alternate routes.

Washington Bridge, East Providence/Providence

New Traffic Pattern: Bypass lanes for I-195 West traffic from East Providence to Providence are open. This temporary traffic pattern allows three lanes of travel eastbound and three lanes of travel westbound – all operating on the eastbound Washington Bridge. Expect delays.

Providence: Gano St., from India St. to the I-195 West on-ramp, road closed for bridge demolition, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Providence: I-195 East, at Exit 1A, exit closed for electrical work, Sun. and Thurs. nights, 7 p.m. – 5 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Providence: I-195 East, from the Providence River Bridge to the Washington Bridge, lane closures for electrical work, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.:

I-95 North Viaduct, Providence

Providence: I-95 North motorists are using a new traffic pattern after the Downtown exit and near Providence Place Mall with a newly relocated Exit 38, about one mile south of its former location. RIDOT has posted numerous signs to guide motorists to their destinations.

Reconstruction of Route 146 (Lincoln/North Smithfield)

North Smithfield: A lane split is in place on Rte. 146 North just before the Sayles Hill Rd. intersection. Rte. 146 NB through-traffic will continue straight over the new portion of the Sayles Hill Rd. flyover in the left lane. Sayles Hill Rd. traffic, local turns, and wide loads are directed to the right lane. Both lanes continue north through Rte. 146.

Temporary Bridge Closure

Providence: The West River St. Bridge, from Corliss St. to Branch Ave., is closed to all traffic for approximately four months. Follow signed detours, noting a temporary traffic signal is in place at the intersection of Charles St. and West River St. to assist with added detour traffic.

Temporary Road Closure

Providence: Effective Thurs. (Sept. 12), the City of Providence will close Potters Ave., from Bucklin St. to Elmwood Ave., and have a right lane closure on Elmwood Ave. South, from Greenwich St. to Hawthorne St., for sewer repair, weekdays, 7 a.m.-5 p.m. through Tues. Oct. 8. Follow signed detour.
