Interstate Highway Restrictions

Washington Bridge & I-195, East Providence/Providence

Bypass lanes for I-195 West traffic from East Providence to Providence remain open. This temporary traffic pattern allows three lanes of travel eastbound and three lanes of travel westbound – all operating on the eastbound Washington Bridge. Expect delays.

East Providence/Providence: I-195 East, from Exit 1A to Exit 2A, up to two lanes closed for drainage work, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. One lane will be closed at 9 p.m., then two lanes will be closed at 10 p.m.

East Providence:
I-195 West, from Pawtucket Ave. to I-95, right lane closed in a moving operation for drainage work, Tues. night, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

East Providence:
Potter St., from School St. to Freeborn St., alternating one-way traffic for survey work, Tues., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.  

Providence:
I-195 West, from Exit 1D to Exit 1C, right lane closed for survey work, Sun. night, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Providence: I-195 West Exit 1C on-ramp to South Main St., alternating lane closures for survey work, Mon., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.


I-95 North Viaduct, Providence

Providence: I-95 North motorists are using a new traffic pattern after the Downtown exit and near Providence Place Mall with a newly relocated Exit 38, about one mile south of its former location. RIDOT has posted numerous signs to guide motorists to their destinations.

Providence: The ramp from Rte. 6 East to I-95 North, and the ramp from Memorial Blvd. to I-95 North will be temporarily closed for bridge work, Sun. night, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m.  and Mon. night, 11 p.m. – 5 a.m. Follow signed detours.

Providence: I-95 North, from Exit 36A to Exit 39A, alternating lane closures road work, Tues. – Thurs. night, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

Ongoing Traffic Patterns

Cranston: All travel lanes on I-95 North and South at Route 10 have shifted to the right through 2026.

Providence: All travel lanes are shifted to the right on I-95 North, between the Rte. 10/Elmwood Ave. off-ramp (Exit 33) and the Thurbers Ave. off-ramp (Exit 35), for replacement of the Broad and Eddy St. Bridges in Providence through 2027. Learn more.

Providence: I-95 at Eddy Street, all lanes are narrowed and shifted to the left on I-95 North and South at this overpass, located near the Thurbers Ave. (Exit 35) interchange for bridge work until further notice.

Temporary Ramp Closures

Providence: I-95 South Exit 37C will be temporarily closed for guardrail repairs, Wed. evening, 10 p.m. – midnight. Follow signed detour.

Overnight

Providence: I-95 North, at the Exit 37 interchange, including the ramp from Rte. 6 to I-95 South, ramp narrowing in a moving operation for sweeping, Thurs. night, 9 p.m.-4 a.m.

Providence: I-95 South at Exit 35, access to Eddy St. will be temporarily closed for electrical work, Mon. night, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. The exit will remain open during this operation. Follow signed detour.

I-95 South on-ramp to I-195 East, alternating lane closures for a bridge inspection, Thurs. night, 9 p.m. – 3 a.m.  

Providence/Cranston/Warwick:
I-95, from Jefferson Blvd. to Thurbers Ave., alternating lane closures for bridge demolition/construction and paving, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Smithfield:
I-295 South, from Rte. 146 to Exit 15B, lanes will be shifted for utility work in the roadway, Wed. evening, 9 p.m. – midnight.

Smithfield:
I-295 South, from Farnum Pk. to Mountaindale Rd., left lane closed for utility work, Thurs. night, midnight – 5 a.m.

Warwick:
I-95, from Exit 27 to Exit 29, alternating lane closures for a bridge inspection, Sun. and Mon. nights, 9 p.m. – 4 a.m.

Warwick/East Greenwich: I-95 North, from Exit 24A to Exit 24B, right lane closed for guardrail work, Sun. and Mon. nights, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Weekday

Hopkinton: I-95 North, from Conn. Exit 93 to Exit 1, right lane closed for bridge work, Tues., 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Hopkinton: I-95 South, from Woodville Rd. overpass to Main St. Bridge overpass, right lane closed for bridge work, Tues., 9:30 a.m.-11 a.m.

Pawtucket: I-95 North at Exit 43, right shoulder closed for wrong-way driving system work, Tues. and Fri., 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Continuing

Cumberland: I-295, over Rte. 122 (Mendon Rd.), at the Mendon Rd. Bridge, travel lanes reduced from three to two for bridge work.

Warwick: The on-ramp to I-95 North from Rte. 113 (East Ave.) will be closed through the fall. Follow signed detour.

Other Limited Access Highway Restrictions

Reconstruction of Route 146 (Lincoln/North Smithfield)

North Smithfield: A lane split is in place on Rte. 146 North and South just before the Sayles Hill Rd. intersection. Rte. 146 through-traffic will continue straight over the new portion of the Sayles Hill Rd. flyover in the left lane. Sayles Hill Rd. traffic, local turns, and wide loads are directed to the right lane. Both lanes continue north through Rte. 146.

Lincoln: I-295, from Exit 18A to Exit 18B, alternating lane closures for bridge construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

Lincoln:
Rte. 146, from Exit 8A to Exit 8B, will be temporarily closed for bridge construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Lincoln: 
Rte. 146 North Service Rd. and Exit 18B on I-295 North, and Rte. 146 South Service Rd. and Exit 18A on I-295 South will be closed for guardrail installation, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Lincoln: Rte. 99 South, from Exit 1 to Rte. 146 South, road closed for bridge repairs, Tues. night, 9 p.m.-6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

The Rte. 146 North and South Service Roads, from Rte. 99 to Exit 10, will be closed for road construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

Rte. 146 at Sayles Hill Rd., no left turn access for road and bridge construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

North Smithfield:
The east side of Sayles Hill Rd., from Rte. 99 to Rte. 146, alternating lane closures for road construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Westbound traffic from Rte. 99 to Sayles Hill Rd. will not be permitted. Follow signed detour.

North Smithfield:
The west side of Sayles Hill Rd., from Rte. 146 to Iron Mine Hill Rd. will be closed for road and bridge construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

North Smithfield:
The west side of Sayles Hill Rd., from Rte. 146 to Iron Mine Hill Rd. will be closed for road construction, Mon. – Fri., 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. Follow signed detour.

North Smithfield: Rte. 146, from Exit 10 to the Mass. line, alternating lane closures for road construction, Mon. – Fri., 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Continuing Traffic Changes

North Smithfield: Travel lanes have shifted at the Rte. 146/Rte. 146A (Exit 10) interchange, with the following changes:

  • Rte. 146 North: both travel lanes have shifted to the right
  • Rte. 146 North, at Exit 10 (Rte. 146A): ramp narrows at the exit from two lanes to one
  • Rte. 146A South, at the off-ramp to Rte. 146 South: travel lanes are narrow

Route 37 Improvements (Cranston/Warwick/Johnston)

Cranston: A new traffic pattern with travel lanes going from two to one in each direction on Route 2 (New London Avenue) at the Route 37 overpass is in place through November for bridge replacement. Learn more.

Cranston/Johnston: I-295 North, from Rte. 37 (Exit 3 A/B) to Rte. 6 (Exit 9), alternating lane closures to install pavement reflectors, Tues. and Wed. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Cranston/Johnston: I-295 South in the vicinity of Rte. 37, alternating lane closures to install pavement reflectors, Tues. and Wed. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Ongoing Traffic Patterns

Cranston: Elmwood Ave. at the Rte. 10 overpass, lanes are narrowed, and one of the two lanes on Elmwood Ave. southbound is closed for bridge work until further notice.

Cumberland/Lincoln:
All Rte. 99 traffic has shifted to the right through the end of the year at the Blackstone River Bridge, carrying Rte. 99 over the Blackstone River.

East Greenwich: Expect shoulder closures on Rte. 4 at Exit 5 through summer 2026.

Providence:
All traffic on Rte. 146 under the Hawkins St. Bridge has shifted to the right.

Providence/Cranston:
The off-ramp from Rte. 10 North to Elmwood Ave. is be closed through fall 2026 while we work to build a new interchange as part of ongoing work for our I-95 15 Bridges Project. Learn more.

East Greenwich: Rte. 4 South, from Exit 9 to Exit 24B, left lane closed for guardrail work, Tues. and Wed. nights, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Lincoln: Rte. 146 North at Twin River Rd., left lane closed for bridge work, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

Tiverton: Rte. 24 South, from Fish Rd. to Main Rd., right lane closed in a moving operation for brush cutting, Mon. night, 9 p.m.-7 a.m.

Weekday

Johnston: Rte. 6 West, off-ramp to Atwood Ave., right shoulder closed for electrical signage replacement, Mon., 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Northern R.I. & Blackstone Valley

Temporary Road Closure

Cumberland: On Mon. night (Dec. 15) from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., RIDOT will temporarily close Newell Bridge in Cumberland for the installation of the final bridge beam. When the bridge reopens on Tuesday morning, both lanes will be restored to their full width. Lanes have been narrowed because of construction. Learn more.

Ongoing Traffic Patterns

Cumberland: We have shifted traffic onto the newly constructed south side of the Mendon Road Bridge on Rte. 122. One lane in each direction will be maintained on the bridge through fall 2025.

Foster: Alternating one-way traffic with a temporary traffic signal at the Moosup Valley Rd. Bridge, from Potter Rd. to the Tyler Free Library, will remain in place until further notice. Learn more.

Lincoln: School St., from Rte. 126 (Old River Rd.) to Main St. in Albion, will close weekdays from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. for utility and roadway improvements through the end of the year. Access to local businesses and homes will be maintained. Follow signed detours.

Overnight

Cumberland: Rte. 122 (Mendon Rd.), from the Lincoln line to I-295 North, alternating lane closures for sidewalk work, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

Cumberland: Rte. 114 (Diamond Hill Rd.), from Rte. 120 to the Bentley Field Complex, alternating one-way traffic for bridge construction, Mon. – Fri., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
