Question:
Should contractors base their take-off of driveway areas strictly by the size of the opening shown on the general plans? Very often the depth of concrete is increased on both sides of the driveway to account for vehicles driving over the edges of the curb opening. Otherwise excessive cracking of the sidewalks takes place at nearly every driveway that may have a delivery truck come in. Should there be a separate bid item to account for additional concrete walks/driveways at this likely work, or would RIDOT prefer to negotiate for added work at every location this might likely take place?
Answer:
The concrete driveway detail has been revised on the Miscellaneous Details Plan and will be included in Addendum No. 1.

Question:
On the General Plans, there is not a distinct line/arrow depicting the beginning of new curb and the resetting of existing curb. Question:
Please clarify Item #37 - 906.9902 - Curb and sidewalks - 15,100 linear feet. Huh?? Why aren't all of the pay items being listed as usual? there are too many variables to bid this the way set up in this bid. How is bidder to know where driveways versus sidewalk areas stop/start? Is bidder supposed to know how much gravel subbase may or may not be required? The list goes on and on!
Answer:
The Department has decided to combine several standard and non‐standard related items of work into one job specific pay item. As recommended for all projects, the contractor should become familiar with the existing field conditions, plans and contract document prior to posting their bid. The concrete sidewalk and driveway specific locations can be found on the general plans. The limits for concrete sidewalk areas versus concrete driveway areas can be found on the Miscellaneous Detail Plan. This new specification in coordination with contractor Invoicing, will greatly reduce documentation efforts typically required for each of the individual pay items.
