Interstate Highway Restrictions

Washington Bridge & I-195, East Providence/Providence

Bypass lanes for I-195 West traffic from East Providence to Providence remain open. This temporary traffic pattern allows three lanes of travel eastbound and three lanes of travel westbound – all operating on the eastbound Washington Bridge. Expect delays.

East Providence/Providence: I-195 West, from Broadway to Exit 1C, up to two lanes closed for bridge preventative maintenance, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

East Providence/Providence: I-195 West, from Broadway to Exit 1C, up to two lanes closed for drainage work, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. If only one lane needs to be taken, the operation will begin at 9 p.m.

East Providence/Providence: I-195, from I-95 to the Mass. line, single lane closure in a moving operation for sweeping, Tues. night, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Providence: I-195, before and after the Providence River (Iway) Bridge, right shoulder closures in a moving operation for drainage work, Tues. night, 9 p.m.-4 a.m.

Ongoing Traffic Patterns

Cranston: All travel lanes on I-95 North and South at Route 10 have shifted to the right through 2026.

Providence:
All travel lanes are shifted to the right on I-95 North, between the Rte. 10/Elmwood Ave. off-ramp (Exit 33) and the Thurbers Ave. off-ramp (Exit 35), for replacement of the Broad and Eddy St. Bridges in Providence through 2027. Learn more.

Providence: I-95 at Eddy Street, all lanes are narrowed and shifted to the left on I-95 North and South at this overpass, located near the Thurbers Ave. (Exit 35) interchange for bridge work until further notice.

Overnight

Providence/Cranston/Warwick: I-95, from Rte. 37 to Thurbers Ave., alternating lane closures for bridge construction and barrier work, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Warwick:  On Fri. night (Jan. 16), we are scheduled to temporarily close the on-ramp from Jefferson Blvd. to I-95 South in Warwick for ongoing bridge construction through summer 2027. During the closure, all traffic on Jefferson Blvd. heading to I-95 South should use the on-ramp to the Airport Connector outbound, located about ½ mile south of the intersection of Jefferson Blvd., Kilvert St., and Coronado Rd. Hopkinton: I-95 South, from Exit 4 to just past Woodville Rd., right lane closed for bridge work, Wed., 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m., and I-95 North, from Exit 1 to just past Woodville Rd., right lane closed for bridge work, Wed., noon – 2:30 p.m.

Continuing

Cumberland: I-295, over Rte. 122 (Mendon Rd.), at the Mendon Rd. Bridge, travel lanes reduced from three to two for bridge work.

Warwick: The on-ramp to I-95 North from Rte. 113 (East Ave.) will be closed through the fall. Follow signed detour.

Other Limited Access Highway Restrictions

Reconstruction of Route 146 (Lincoln/North Smithfield)

North Smithfield: Four lanes of traffic are now open on the newly built flyover ramp on Route 146 over Sayles Hill Road in North Smithfield. Drivers can also use the service roads on each side of the highway to access Sayles Hill Road and local businesses. Learn more.

Upcoming Traffic Changes

North Smithfield: Rte. 146, from Rte. 146A to the Mass. line, alternating lane closures for road construction, Mon. – Fri., 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

North Smithfield: The east side of Sayles Hill Rd., from Rte. 99 to Rte. 146, alternating lane closures for road construction, Mon. – Fri., 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. Westbound traffic from Sayles Hill Rd. will not be permitted. Follow signed detour.

North Smithfield: The west side of Sayles Hill Rd., from Rte. 146 to Iron Mine Hill Rd. will be closed for road construction, Mon. – Fri., 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. Follow signed detour.

Continuing Traffic Changes

North Smithfield: Travel lanes have shifted at the Rte. 146/Rte. 146A (Exit 10) interchange, with the following changes:

  • Rte. 146 North: both travel lanes have shifted to the right
  • Rte. 146 North, at Exit 10 (Rte. 146A): ramp narrows at the exit from two lanes to one
  • Rte. 146A South, at the off-ramp to Rte. 146 South: travel lanes are narrow

Route 37 Improvements (Cranston/Warwick/Johnston)

Cranston: A new traffic pattern with travel lanes going from two to one in each direction on Route 2 (New London Avenue) at the Route 37 overpass is in place for bridge replacement. Learn more.

Cranston: All lanes have been temporarily shifted to the right on Rte. 37 West, from I-295 to Rte. 2, to create a work zone that will allow the Department to continue phased demolition and reconstruction of the bridge carrying Route 37 over Oaklawn Avenue. Learn more.

Cranston: Rte. 37, from Glen Hills Dr. to I-295, alternating lane closures for bridge construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Cranston: Rte. 37, from Glen Hills Dr. to Power Rd., alternating lane closures for temporary lighting installation, Mon. – Thurs. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Cranston: Rte. 5 (Oaklawn Ave.), from Brayton Ave. to Sherman Ave. will be temporarily closed for bridge construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Cranston: Rte. 2 (New London Ave.), from Sockanosset Cross Rd. to Howard Ave. will be temporarily closed for bridge demolition/construction, Mon. – Thurs. nights, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Cranston: Rte. 37, from I-295 to Glen Hills Dr.; from New London Ave. to Power Rd.; and from Jefferson Blvd. to Post Rd., alternating lane closures in a moving operation for striping, Tues. and Wed., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Ongoing Traffic Patterns

Cranston: Elmwood Ave. at the Rte. 10 overpass, lanes are narrowed, and one of the two lanes on Elmwood Ave. southbound is closed for bridge work until further notice.

Cumberland/Lincoln:
All Rte. 99 traffic has shifted to the right through the end of the year at the Blackstone River Bridge, carrying Rte. 99 over the Blackstone River.

East Greenwich: Expect shoulder closures on Rte. 4 at Exit 5 through summer 2026.

Providence:
All traffic on Rte. 146 under the Hawkins St. Bridge has shifted to the right.

Providence/Cranston:
The off-ramp from Rte. 10 North to Elmwood Ave. is to be closed through fall 2026 while we work to build a new interchange as part of ongoing work for our I-95 15 Bridges Project. Learn more.

Temporary Exit Closure

Portsmouth: Rte. 24 South, at Exit 1 (Turnpike Ave.), exit closed for brush cutting, Tues. night, 9 p.m. – 7 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Overnight

East Greenwich: Rte. 403 East, from Rte. 4 to Exit 2, right lane closed for steel beam installation, Fri. night, (Jan. 9), 10 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Lincoln: Twin River Rd. over 146, alternating one-way traffic for steel beam installation, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. This operation will last approximately two weeks. Learn more.

Ongoing Traffic Patterns

Cumberland: We have shifted traffic onto the newly constructed south side of the Mendon Road Bridge on Rte. 122. One lane in each direction will be maintained on the bridge through fall 2025.

Foster: Alternating one-way traffic with a temporary traffic signal at the Moosup Valley Rd. Bridge, from Potter Rd. to the Tyler Free Library, will remain in place until further notice. Learn more.

Lincoln: Twin River Rd. over 146, alternating one-way traffic for steel beam installation, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. This operation will last approximately two weeks. Learn more.

East Greenwich: Rte. 402 (Frenchtown Rd.) at the Frenchtown Road Bridge, lanes are temporarily reduced from two to one in each direction through the end of the year for bridge replacement. Learn more.

Warwick: Rte. 113 (East Ave.) over I-95 and I-295, lanes shifted until further notice for bridge work. One lane in each direction is in place.

Warwick: Jefferson Blvd. under I-95, the right lane in each direction is closed until further notice for bridge work.
