Interstate Highway Restrictions

Washington Bridge & I-195, East Providence/Providence

Bypass lanes for I-195 West traffic from East Providence to Providence remain open. This temporary traffic pattern allows three lanes of travel eastbound and three lanes of travel westbound – all operating on the eastbound Washington Bridge. Expect delays.

Providence: I-195 East, from Exit 1A to Exit 1B/C, and I-195 West, from Potter St. to the Gano St. on-ramp, two right lanes closed for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system work, Tues. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 4 a.m.

Providence: Gano St., between India St. and Wickenden St., alternating one-way traffic for a utility inspection, Wed. – Fri., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

I-95 North Viaduct, Providence

Providence: I-95 North motorists are using a new traffic pattern after the Downtown exit and near Providence Place Mall with a newly relocated Exit 38, about one mile south of its former location. RIDOT has posted numerous signs to guide motorists to their destinations.

Providence: I-95 North at Exit 38, we’ll begin work to open additional travel lanes on Fri. night (May 30) starting at 9 p.m., opening by Sat. morning (May 31).

Providence: I-95 North at the Exit 37 interchange, various ramps will be closed then reopened when no longer needed for bridge demolition, Mon. – Thurs. nights, 11 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detours.

Providence: I-95, from Exit 37A to Exit 39A, alternating lane closures for milling, paving, and utility restructure alignment, Mon. night, 10 p.m. – 6 a.m. and Tues.– Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

New Traffic Pattern

Cranston: All travel lanes on I-95 North and South at Route 10 have shifted to the right through 2026.

Overnight

Providence/Cranston: I-95, from Park Ave. to Thurbers Ave. alternating lane closures for bridge and tree work, Mon. night, midnight – 5 a.m., and Tues. – Thurs. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.    

Weekday

Hopkinton: I-95, from the Conn. line to Exit 1, right shoulder closures for a bridge inspection, Wed., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Johnston: I-295 North at Rte. 6, shoulder closures for survey work, weekdays starting Tues. (May 27) through Thurs. June 5, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Warwick/East Greenwich: I-95 South, from Rte. 4 to Division St., left shoulder closed for drainage work, Thurs., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Continuing

Cumberland: I-295, over Rte. 122 (Mendon Rd.), at the Mendon Rd. Bridge, travel lanes reduced from three to two for bridge work.

Warwick: I-95 North, from Exit 24B to Exit 27, lanes have shifted to the right for road widening through June.

Warwick: The on-ramp to I-95 North from Rte. 113 (East Ave.) will be closed through the fall. Follow signed detour.

Other Limited Access Highway Restrictions

Reconstruction of Route 146 (Lincoln/North Smithfield)

North Smithfield: A lane split is in place on Rte. 146 North just before the Sayles Hill Rd. intersection. Rte. 146 NB through-traffic will continue straight over the new portion of the Sayles Hill Rd. flyover in the left lane. Sayles Hill Rd. traffic, local turns, and wide loads are directed to the right lane. Both lanes continue north through Rte. 146.

Lincoln: I-295 North and South at Exits 18A/B to Rte. 146 North and South, alternating lane closures and temporary ramp closures as needed for bridge construction, Tues. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Lincoln: Rte. 146, at the I-295 Exits 8A/8B will be closed for bridge construction as needed, Tues. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Traffic will be detoured to the Rte. 146 service roads.

Lincoln: Rte. 146 service roads at I-295 Exit 8A/8B will be closed for bridge construction as needed, Tues. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Traffic will be detoured to Rte. 146 mainline.

Lincoln: Rte. 146, from Exit 7 to Exit 8C, alternating lane closures for bridge and road construction, Tues. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

Lincoln: Rte. 99 South, from Exit 1 to Rte. 146, alternating lane closures for bridge work, Tues. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.  

North Smithfield: Rte. 146, from Rte. 99 to the Mass. line, alternating lane closures for road construction, Tues. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

North Smithfield: Sayles Hill Rd. eastbound, from Rte. 146 to Iron Mine Hill Rd. will be closed for road construction, Tues. – Fri., 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. Follow signed detour.

North Smithfield: Rte. 146, from Exit 10 to the Mass. line, alternating lane closures for road construction, Tues. – Fri., 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Lincoln: I-295 North, at the Rte. 146 interchange, lanes remain shifted to the left.

North Smithfield: Travel lanes have shifted at the Rte. 146/Rte. 146A (Exit 10) interchange, with the following changes:

  • Rte. 146 North: both travel lanes have shifted to the right
  • Rte. 146 North, at Exit 10 (Rte. 146A): ramp narrows at the exit from two lanes to one
  • Rte. 146A South, at the off-ramp to Rte. 146 South: travel lanes are narrow

Route 37 Improvements (Cranston/Warwick/Johnston)

Cranston: Cranston St. below Rte. 37, from Sherman Ave. to Overbrook Dr., alternating one-way traffic for bridge construction, Wed. – Fri., 6 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Cranston: Rte. 37 West, from Oaklawn Ave. to Exit 1A, crews will be paving behind barrier, with frequent vehicle access in and out of the work zone, Thurs., 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Johnston: I-295 North, from Exit 6 to Exit 9, alternating lane closures for landscaping, Tues. – Fri., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

6/10 Interchange Project (Providence)

Route 10

  • Rte. 10 South, all lanes shift to the left near the Broadway overpass.
  • Westminster Street off-ramp is temporarily closed.

Route 6

  • Rte. 6 West, from Broadway to Hartford Ave., left lane closed for median barrier work, Tues. – Fri. nights (May 30), 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Affected City Streets

  • Traffic shifted on the Broadway and Westminster St. bridges over the highway.

Project-wide

  • Periodic one-lane closures possible along Rte. 10 and Rte. 6 on off-peak hours, Mon. – Fri.

Ongoing Traffic Patterns

Cumberland/Lincoln: All Rte. 99 traffic will shift to the right through the end of the year at the Blackstone River Bridge, carrying Rte. 99 over the Blackstone River.

Providence: All traffic on Rte. 146 under the Hawkins St. Bridge has shifted to the right.

Temporary Road Closure

Lincoln: Rte. 99 South, from Mendon Rd. to Exit 1, road closed for bridge work, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. through July. Follow signed detour.

Temporary Exit/Ramp Closures

Lincoln: The on-ramps from Breakneck Hill Rd. to Rte. 146 remain closed for bridge work until further notice. Follow signed detour.

Overnight

Lincoln: Rte. 146 at Twin River Rd., left lane closures for bridge demolition, Tues. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

Lincoln: Rte. 146 at Breakneck Hill Rd., alternating lane closures with rolling roadblocks for bridge work, Wed., and Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. 

North Kingstown: Rte. 403 East, from Rte. 4 to Roger Williams Wy., right lane closed in moving operation for sweeping, Tues. night, 9 p.m. – 7 a.m.

North Kingstown: Rte. 403 East, from Devil’s Foot Rd. to Exit 2., right laned closed for bridge work, Tues. – Thurs. nights, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Ongoing Traffic Patterns

Burrillville: The Glendale Bridge, carrying Victory Hwy. over the Branch River, between Main St. and Snake Hill Rd., is closed for reconstruction through mid-summer 2025. Follow signed detour.

Burrillville: A temporary traffic signal and alternating traffic on Rte. 7, between Dion Dr. and Reynolds Mill St., is in place to repair a retaining wall through the end of 2025. Seek alternate routes.

Cumberland: We have shifted traffic onto the newly constructed south side of the Mendon Road Bridge on Rte. 122. One lane in each direction will be maintained on the bridge through fall 2025.

Foster: Moosup Valley Road, between Potter Road and the Tyler Free Library, one lane of traffic with alternating direction controlled by a temporary traffic signal through spring 2026 for bridge work.

Overnight

Cumberland: Rte. 116 (Angel Rd.), from Mendon Rd. to Rte. 114 (Diamond Hill Rd.), alternating lane closures for paving, Tues. – Thurs. nights, 8 p.m. – 6 a.m.
