Question:
The requirement to pre-camber the 75 foot bridge 6 inches before dead and live load is applied would require special fabrication. The standard from the AASHTO Guide Specifications for FRP bridge is to account for dead load only. Could we pre-camber the bridge so that dead and full live load would create a net camber of 0 inches in lieu of 6 inches before dead and live load is applied to circumvent costs due to special fabrication?
Answer:
The specifications call for a camber in the 75-foot span of 6 inches AFTER dead load only is applied. This 6-inch camber is required for the 75’ span. Independently of camber, the span shall be designed to limit deflection due to live loads to 1/500 of span length per Job-Specific Specification section 801.9901.

Question:
What are the embedment depths of the 12" pipe piles?
Answer:
The boring logs and estimated pile lengths are provided in the contract documents. The contractor shall order test piles for two Pile Dynamic Analysis (PDA’s) tests in the field in accordance with Foundation Note 5. Once the PDA’s are complete the Contractor’s engineer will prepare a PDA test report that will propose final driving criteria to the Engineer for review. Should the pile driving result in practical refusal before the bedrock elevation is achieved - for lateral pile stability, the minimum tip elevation shall be EL = -16.00 at the abutments and EL = -20.00 at the pier locations. A note will be added to the project plans by addendum.
