The Bridge Design section is responsible for the preparation of engineering plans, specifications and estimates for the construction and reconstruction of Rhode Islandís State-owned and maintained bridges. The unitís talents were on full display in 2010, as the State set out on several large-scale bridge projects and worked to maintain its infrastructure following the March flooding.
Recent focus has been on the Sakonnet River Bridge, which began in 2009 and will continue through this year, and the Pawtucket River Bridge, which broke ground this fall. The Pawtucket Bridge, which carries I-95 over the Pawtucket River, is of particular importance because the weight limit imposed forces the state to redirect commercial traffic around the city. Officials hope to shift traffic onto new structures by spring 2012 so the posting can be lifted on this vital highway.
Bridge Inspection, within Bridge Design, is responsible for the federally mandated biennial inspection program, and other specialized programs including those for scour and fracture-critical structures, and the development of a Bridge Management System.
