What's Happening?

On March 2, 2021 the voters of Rhode Island will be asked to vote on seven bond issues totaling $400 million. Simple majority is needed to pass the bond issue which includes seven questions. Question 4 would issue $71.7 million out of the total $400 million for transportation infrastructure. These funds would give RIDOT the resources to provide the required state match for the federal funds the agency uses to build and repair Rhode Island's roads and bridges. Every state dollar leverages four federal dollars.

Additional Information on Question 4:

  • The ballot language for Question 4 is "To provide state funds to the Department of Transportation that will be increased with vital federal funding and used to continue the reconstruction of Rhode Island's deficient roads and bridges and provide employment opportunities for the Rhode Island workers who rebuild Rhode Island's transportation system."
  • The $71.7 million in this bond will be combined with $286.8 million funding from the federal government (a four to one match) to provide a total of $358.5 million additional dollars to be used solely for continuing the successful reconstruction of Rhode Island's roads and bridges. This work creates hundreds of new construction and construction support jobs and enhances the economic health of our state by providing the efficient and modern transportation system the State needs to support existing businesses and attract new businesses.
  • The bond proceeds combined with federal funding will be used in State fiscal year 2021 and 2022.
  • The bridges RIDOT builds will have a useful life of up to 75 years.
