Wellington Avenue Bridge Over I-95

WEEKEND LANE CLOSURES & WEEKDAY LANE SPLITS | Click for Details

  • Wellington Avenue Bridge Over I-95

The Project

Between August 25 and September 18, RIDOT will have a series of four consecutive weekend lane closures of I-95 near Route 10/Exit 33 at the Cranston/Providence line for replacement of the Wellington Avenue Bridge. This rapid approach to bridge replacement saves motorists more than two years of lane closures, shifts and splits.

This operation will have two significant impacts on traffic:

There will be two weeks of lane splits on I-95, the first from August 25 - September 1 on I-95 South and the next from September 11-15 on I-95 North. All lanes will be open. Stay in your lane. All lanes go through. There may be some slow down but that will be minimized if everyone stays in their lane.

On the four consecutive weekends, we’ll reduce lanes to two or three lanes of travel. For these weekends, we ask that drivers avoid this part of I-95 and use alternate routes such as I-295 and Route 10. Take the extra few minutes to follow those routes to avoid longer delays on I-95.

Travelers should expect delays and use alternate routes such as Route 10 and I-295 on these weekends.

Schedule

Each weekend, lanes will be closed on both sides of the highway as RIDOT demolishes and replaces different parts of this structurally deficient bridge. The closures start each weekend at 8 p.m. on Fridays with all lanes open by 5 a.m. Monday morning. RIDOT will keep at least two lanes open on the side of the bridge being worked on each weekend. Here is the latest schedule:

  • August 28 - September 1: There will be a lane split on I-95 South near Route 10 in Cranston, with two lanes on either side of the split. All lanes go through.

  • September 1-4: The two right lanes on I-95 South and the left lane on I-95 North will be closed beginning at 8 p.m. Friday night, September 1. All lanes reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, September 4. Additionally, Exit 33 (A&B) to Route 10 will be closed for I-95 South drivers. Drivers headed to Route 10 will have to take Jefferson Boulevard and circle back via I-95 North.

  • September 4-7: There will be no lane split, northbound or southbound.

  • September 8: There will be a lane split on I-95 North near Route 10 in Cranston, with two lanes on either side of the split. All lanes go through.

  • September 8-11: The two left lanes on I-95 North and the left lane on I-95 South will be closed beginning at 7 p.m. Friday night, September 8. All lanes reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, September 11. Additionally, the ramp from Route 10 North to I-95 North will be closed.

  • September 11-15: There will be a lane split on I-95 North near Route 10 in Cranston, with two lanes on either side of the split. All lanes go through.

  • Through September 15: There will be a lane split on I-95 North near Route 10 in Cranston, with two lanes on either side of the split. All lanes go through.
  • September 15-18: The two right lanes on I-95 North and the left lane on I-95 South will be closed beginning at 7 p.m. Friday night, September 15. Additionally, the ramps from Route 10 North and Route 10 South to I-95 North will be closed. Drivers should remain on Route 10 North onto the Route 6/10 Connector toward Providence, or seek alternate routes.
  • September 18: All lanes open by 5 a.m. There will be no lane split, northbound or southbound

The bridge replacement operation also requires the closure of Wellington Avenue at the bridge. RIDOT will implement a signed detour for local traffic. The detour will be in effect until mid-September.
