    I-95 Pawtucket River Bridge Replacement & City Street Detours

    View of Pawtucket River Bridge from above The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has started work on a large project to replace the Pawtucket River Bridge, two spans carrying I-95 North and South near the George Street and School Street exits. In order to build this bridge as quickly as possible while maintaining a safe work environment for the contractor, motorists and pedestrians, the Department will be closing streets for both the short and long term as construction progresses.

    Each closure will be announced well in advance with detour maps and turn-by-turn directions provided. The most recent changes are scheduled to go into effect on May 16, 2011.

    Partly due to the number of one-way streets in the area, the detour routes require several turns to get around closed areas. New closures may also result in changes to previously-established detours. RIDOT strongly encourages motorists to become familiar with the detour routes before driving them:


    The planned closures will not impact existing local detours for truck traffic on I-95 due to an 18-ton weight limit on the Pawtucket River Bridge.

    All schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.

    Garden Street Closure

    RIDOT is scheduled to close the Garden Street Bridge over I-95 to all traffic on May 16, 2011. This section of Garden Street will remain closed until Spring 2012. Signed detours will be established. See below for maps and turn-by-turn directions.

  • Turn right on Cedar Street
  • Turn left onto Main Street
  • Turn left onto Pearl Street to return to Garden Street


    George Street Northbound Closure

    RIDOT is closing the northbound half of the George Street Bridge over I-95 effective May 16, 2011. The closure will be in place until Spring 2012. Signed detours will be established. See below for maps and turn-by-turn directions.

  • Turn left onto Grace Street
  • Turn right onto Pine Street
  • Turn right onto Church Street
  • Follow Church Street to reach Park Place (George Street becomes Park Place north of the highway).


    Pleasant Street Closure

    RIDOT closed a section of Pleasant Street in Pawtucket (from Division Street to Jenks Way) on February 14, 2011. This section of road will remain closed until mid-2013. Signed detours will be established. See below for maps and turn-by-turn directions.
