The I-95 15 design-build project is the largest ever undertaken by Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) and will remove 15 bridges from the state’s backlog of poor and fair, but nearing poor, condition bridges along I-95 and Route 10 between Providence and Warwick – a critical corridor which carries 185,000 vehicles daily.
The project will take a major step in addressing the I-95 corridor holistically, to encourage the safe movement of almost 200,000 vehicles and $9.7 billion in freight. About 9,000 trucks and heavy freight vehicles use this corridor, which includes hospitals, businesses and universities, daily.
The cost of this project is offset by a recent $251 million federal Bridge Investment Program (BIP) grant made to the department.

Next Friday night, January 16, we're scheduled to close the ramp from Jefferson Boulevard to I-95 South. This will allow us to create a work zone to replace the bridge carrying I-95 over Jefferson Boulevard. While we restripe and shift traffic towards the median to ready for the ramp closure, motorists can expect alternating lane closures on I-95, from Route 37 to Thurbers Avenue, on Friday night, January 16, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Once the ramp is closed, traffic will follow the signed detour via the Airport Connector through spring 2027. Other work at this project next week includes removing the existing median barrier, relocating the temporary barrier to create a work zone for the West Elmwood Bridge, and raising the drainage structures on I-95 North and South in the vicinity of Jefferson Boulevard. Alternating lane closures are scheduled along I-95 North and South, from Route 37 to Thurbers Avenue, Sunday-Thursday nights, January 11-15, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. |
