Interstate Highway Restrictions

I-295/Rte. 6 Bridge Rehabilitation (Johnston)

I-295

  • Closure of the southbound through lanes. Through traffic will utilize the new bridges on the service road.
  • Access will be maintained for ramps to Rte. 6 West to Hartford, Conn. (Exit 9C) and Rte. 6 East to Providence (Exit 9A).
  • The on-ramp from Hartford Ave./Rte. 6A West to I-295 South will remain closed.

Rte. 6 and Rte. 6A (Hartford Ave.)

  • Lane closed on the ramp from Rte. 6 West to I-295 North
  • Lane closures possible on both Rte. 6 and Rte. 6A at the I-295 overpasses
  • On-ramp closed from Rte. 6A West to I-295 South. Left turns permitted for nearby on-ramp normally used by Rte. 6A East traffic.
  • Rte. 6 West towards I-295 South ramp, right shoulder closed for construction until the end of March.

New Traffic Pattern

Providence: The I-95 North off-ramp to Rte. 146 North at Exit 23, a new traffic pattern will be in place until mid-Fall, and will change when all lanes shift to the right for the last phase of construction. Final completion of the project is scheduled for Fall 2020.

Weekend

Pawtucket: I-95, from Mass. line to Exit 29, including Exit 30, right lane closed and ramp narrowed for construction, Sat., 7 a.m.-3 p.m.

Overnight

East Greenwich: I-95 South, at the Shippeetown Rd. Bridge, left lane closed for construction, Sun.-Thurs. nights, 8 p.m.-6 a.m.

Pawtucket/Providence:
I-95, from Charles St. to Lonsdale Ave., alternating lane closures for sign work, Tues.-Thurs. nights, 8 p.m.-6 a.m.

Pawtucket:
I-95, from Mass. line to Exit 29, Exit 30 southbound and the on-ramp to I-95 North from Fountain St., alternating lane closures and ramp narrowed for construction, Mon.-Wed. nights, 8 p.m.-4 a.m. 

Providence:
I-95, from Branch Ave. to Smithfield Ave., alternating lane closures for construction, Sun.-Thurs. nights, 9 p.m.-5 a.m.

West Greenwich: I-95 South, at the New London Turnpike Bridge, left lane closed for construction, Sun.-Thurs. nights, 9 p.m.-6 a.m.

Weekday

Cranston: I-295 North, from the on and off-ramp towards Plainfield Pike, ramp narrowing and right shoulder closed for construction, Mon.-Fri., 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Providence:
I-195 West, from Gano St. on-ramp to India Point Park overpass, right lane closed for tree trimming, Wed., 9 a.m.-noon.

Richmond: I-95, at Exit 3A and 3B, ramp narrowed for construction, Mon.-Fri., 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Ongoing Traffic Patterns

Cumberland: I-295, from Exit 20 to Exit 22, lane shifts to the right, with only two lanes of travel open in each direction for bridge work through Spring 2020.

Hopkinton/Richmond: I-95, from Exit 2 to Exit 3, lane shifts for bridge work through June 2020.

  • Two northbound lanes will be shift to the left from the exterior to the median area

Providence/East Providence: Lane shifts are in place on I-195 West, from just after Broadway to the Washington Bridge, and I-195 East, from Pawtucket Ave. to the Mass. line.

Other Limited Access Highway Restrictions

6/10 Interchange Project (Providence)

Rte. 6

  • Rte. 6 East, all traffic shifted onto the existing Rte. 6 West roadway just after the Hartford Ave. exit. Lanes are narrow.
  • The Broadway off ramp is closed.
  • Rte. 6, from Rte. 10 interchange to Hartford Ave., Mon.-Fri., 7 a.m.-2 p.m.

Rte. 10

  • Rte. 10 North, from Union Ave. to the Tobey St. overpass, lane shift in place for through traffic and the Westminster St. off-ramp.
  • Rte. 10, from Union Ave. to Tobey St., alternating lane closures for construction, Sun.-Thurs. nights, 8 p.m.-6 a.m.

6/10 Connector

  • On Connector outbound a new lane split is in place for Rte. 10 South and Route 6 West, one-half mile before its original location. Lanes are narrow.

Affected City Streets

  • Traffic from the Tobey St./Harris Ave. on-ramp does not have direct access to Rte. 10 South. Follow detour signs.
  • Traffic shifted on the Broadway and Westminster St. bridges over the highway.

Project-wide

  • Periodic one-lane closures possible along Rte. 10 and Rte. 6 on off-peak hours Monday-Friday.

New Traffic Pattern

Providence: Westminster St. West at the Westminster St. Bridge, one lane closed for bridge work through 2021.

Providence: A new traffic pattern is in place on Rte. 6, from Hartford Ave. to Killingly St. All lanes shift to the left and one of the three lanes will be closed for bridge construction through Spring 2021.

Weekday

Lincoln: Rte. 146 South, at Rte. 116, left lane closed for construction, Mon.-Wed., 9 a.m.- 1p.m.

Temporary Bridge Closures

Providence: The Bath St. East Bridge, which spans the Woonasquatucket River between Kinsley Ave./Providence Place and Promenade St., is currently closed. Get Detour Maps »

Extended Lane Closures

Providence: Lane closures possible for bridge construction on Providence Place and Promenade St., at their intersection with Park Place and the rear entrance to Providence Place Mall, Mon.-Fri., 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Weekend

East Providence: Pawtucket Ave., from Waterman Ave. to Taunton Ave., alternating lane closures for pavement improvements, Sat., 6 a.m.-noon.

Overnight

Providence: Branch Ave., from the ramp to I-95 South to the ramp to I-95 North, alternating lane closures for bridge work, Sun.-Thurs. nights, 7 p.m.-6 a.m.

Providence: Smithfield Ave., on the Smithfield Ave. Bridge over I-95, alternating lane closures for construction, Sun.-Thur. nights, 7 p.m.-6 a.m.

Weekday

Cranston: Pontiac Ave. under Rte. 37, right lane closed for construction, alternating lane closures for construction, Wed.-Fri., 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
