Interstate Highway Restrictions

Washington Bridge & I-195, East Providence/Providence

Bypass lanes for I-195 West traffic from East Providence to Providence remain open. This temporary traffic pattern allows three lanes of travel eastbound and three lanes of travel westbound – all operating on the eastbound Washington Bridge. Expect delays.

East Providence: I-195 East, from Broadway to Waterfront Dr., and I-195 West, from Taunton Ave. to Broadway, alternating lane closures for drainage work, Sun., Wed. and Thurs. nights, 9 p.m.-5 a.m.

East Providence:
Potter St., from Freeborn Ave. to School St., alternating one-way traffic for soil sampling, Mon. and Wed.-Fri., 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Providence:
I-195 West, before and after the Providence River Bridge, up to two lanes closed for bridge preservation work, Sun.-Thurs. nights, 8 p.m. (one lane), and 10 p.m. (two lanes)-5 a.m.

I-95 North Viaduct, Providence

Providence: I-95 North motorists are using a new traffic pattern after the Downtown exit and near Providence Place Mall with a newly relocated Exit 38, about one mile south of its former location. RIDOT has posted numerous signs to guide motorists to their destinations.

Providence: I-95 North at Exit 37BCD interchange, various ramps will be temporarily closed and reopened as needed for barrier painting and bridge work, Sun.-Thurs. nights, 11 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Providence: I-95, from Exit 37A to Exit 39A, alternating lane closures for barrier painting and concrete finishing, Sun.-Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

Providence: Providence Place, from Harris Ave. to Park Ave. and Promenade St., from Park St. to Leland St., alternating lane closures for paving, Wed.-Fri., 7 a.m.-5 p.m.

Ongoing Traffic Patterns

Cranston: All travel lanes on I-95 North and South at Route 10 have shifted to the right through 2026.

Providence:
All travel lanes are shifted to the right on I-95 North, between the Rte. 10/Elmwood Ave. off-ramp (Exit 33) and the Thurbers Ave. off-ramp (Exit 35), for replacement of the Broad and Eddy St. Bridges in Providence through 2027. Learn more.

Providence: I-95 at Eddy Street, all lanes are narrowed and shifted to the left on I-95 North and South at this overpass, located near the Thurbers Ave. (Exit 35) interchange for bridge work until further notice.

Extended Weekend Closures

Providence: Beginning Fri. night (Nov. 7) at 8 p.m. through Mon. (Nov. 10) at 5 a.m., we will close two lanes in both directions on I-95 for the decommissioning of a bridge over an inactive rail line between Cadillac Dr. and the Roger Williams Park Zoo property. Expect delays and seek alternate routes. Learn more.

Warwick/West Warwick/East Greenwich: Starting on Sat. night (Nov. 8) at 9 p.m., we will begin shifting lanes on I-95 South between Exit 24B (Rte. 4 South) and 24A (Rte. 2 South) to create work zones for RIDOT's Rte. 4 "Missing Move" project. All lanes shift to the left. Learn more.

Providence: I-95 North, alternating double lane closures from Exit 38B to Exit 37B, and lane shifts at Exit 37A, and on the I-95 South on-ramp from Rte. 6 East, for a bridge inspection, Wed. night, 9 p.m.-3:30 a.m.

Providence: I-95 South, from Exit 37A to Exit 41, alternating double lane closures for a bridge inspection, Thurs. night, 9 p.m.-3:30 a.m.

Providence/Cranston: I-95, from Park Ave. to Thurbers Ave., a lane split will be in place for bridge demolition/construction, from 6 p.m. on Sun. night – 8 p.m., Fri. night (Nov. 14). Stay in lane when traveling through the lane split.

Warwick:
I-295 North, at the East Ave. overpass, alternating lane closures for construction, Sun. night, 10 p.m.-6 a.m., Mon. night, 7 p.m.-midnight, and Wed. and Thurs. nights, 7 p.m.-6 a.m.

Warwick/West Warwick:
I-95 South on-ramp from Rte. 2 South (Quacker Ln.), lanes will be shifted to the right and narrowed and will also be periodically closed to create a new work zone, Fri. night (Nov. 7), 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. Follow signed detour.

West Greenwich:
I-95 North, from Exit 9 to Exit 18, alternating lane closures for a bridge inspection, Wed. night, 9 p.m. – 3 a.m.

Cumberland: I-295, over Rte. 122 (Mendon Rd.), at the Mendon Rd. Bridge, travel lanes reduced from three to two for bridge work.

Warwick: The on-ramp to I-95 North from Rte. 113 (East Ave.) will be closed through the fall. Follow signed detour.

Other Limited Access Highway Restrictions

Reconstruction of Route 146 (Lincoln/North Smithfield)

North Smithfield: Beginning Fri. night (Nov. 7) at 8 p.m., we will close one of the two lanes on Route 146 South at the Route 146A interchange in North Smithfield through the weekend, reopening by 5 a.m. on Mon. (Nov. 10). The closure is located approximately one mile south of the Route 104 (Greenville Avenue) exit. Also starting Fri. night, we will close a temporary left-hand ramp from Rte. 146 South to Rte. 146A North for six weeks before it is replaced with a new ramp on the right-hand side of the highway. North Smithfield:
A lane split is in place on Rte. 146 North and South just before the Sayles Hill Rd. intersection. Rte. 146 through-traffic will continue straight over the new portion of the Sayles Hill Rd. flyover in the left lane. Sayles Hill Rd. traffic, local turns, and wide loads are directed to the right lane. Both lanes continue north through Rte. 146.

  • Rte. 146A South, at the off-ramp to Rte. 146 South: travel lanes are narrow

Route 37 Improvements (Cranston/Warwick/Johnston)

Cranston: A new traffic pattern with travel lanes going from two to one in each direction on Route 2 (New London Avenue) at the Route 37 overpass is in place through November for bridge replacement. Learn more.

Cranston:
Travel lanes are reduced from three to two and are shifted to the right on a section of Rte. 37 East over Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, from Exit 2B (I-95 North) and Exit 3A (Route 1/Post Road North) in Warwick for bridge replacement. Learn more.

Cranston:
I-295 South in the vicinity of Rte. 37, alternating lane closures for construction, Sun., Wed. and Thurs. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Cranston:
I-295 North and South in the vicinity of Rte. 37, alternating lane closures for concrete finishing, Tues. night, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Cranston/Johnston: I-295 North, from Rte. 37 to Rte. 6, alternating lane closures for rumble strip installation and concrete finishing, Wed. and Thurs. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Temporary Road Closure

East Greenwich: Rte. 4 North at Exit 5 will be temporarily closed for bridge demolition, Wed. and Thurs. nights. Access from Route 403 West and Route 402 West to Route 4 North will not be affected. The following week, Sun. and Mon. nights (Nov. 16 and 17), Rte. 4 South at Exit 7A will be temporarily closed for demolition. Access will be maintained to Exit 7B for Rte. 403 East. Follow signed detours.

New Traffic Patterns

Providence/Cranston: Starting at 7 p.m. on Fri. (Nov. 7), the off-ramp from Rte. 10 North to Elmwood Ave. will be closed for approximately one year while we work to build a new interchange as part of ongoing work for our I-95 15 Bridges Project. Learn more.

Warwick/East Greenwich: Starting on Sat. night (Nov. 8) at 9 p.m., we will begin shifting lanes on I-95 South between Exit 24B (Rte. 4 South) and 24A (Rte. 2 South) to create work zones for RIDOT's Rte. 4 "Missing Move" project. All lanes shift to the left. Learn more.

East Greenwich: Expect shoulder closures on Rte. 4 at Exit 5 through summer 2026.

Providence: All traffic on Rte. 146 under the Hawkins St. Bridge has shifted to the right.

East Greenwich: Rte. 4, from Exit 5 to Exit 7, alternating lane closures for bridge work, Sun. night, 8 p.m. – 6 a.m. and Mon. night, 8 p.m. – midnight.

Northern R.I. & Blackstone Valley

New Traffic Pattern

Foster: The Mill Road Bridge located between Rte. 102 (Foster Center Rd.) and Wright Ln. is back open to traffic.

Ongoing Traffic Patterns

Cumberland: We have shifted traffic onto the newly constructed south side of the Mendon Road Bridge on Rte. 122. One lane in each direction will be maintained on the bridge through fall 2025.

Foster: Alternating one-way traffic with a temporary traffic signal at the Moosup Valley Rd. Bridge, from Potter Rd. to the Tyler Free Library, will remain in place until further notice. Learn more.

Lincoln: School St., from Rte. 126 (Old River Rd.) to Main St. in Albion, will close weekdays from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. for utility and roadway improvements through the end of the year. Access to local businesses and homes will be maintained. Follow signed detours.

Cumberland: Rte. 122 (Mendon Rd.), from the Lincoln line to I-295 North, shoulder closures for traffic loop installation, Sun., Mon., Wed., and Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

Westerly: The on-ramp from Route 91 (Oak Street) to Route 78 West is temporarily closed, and Route 78 West traffic is shifted to the left through December for bridge work. Follow signed detour. Learn more.
