Pawtucket Avenue Bridge

Temporary Closures and Traffic Pattern Changes

I-195 East Providence: As part of the Pawtucket Avenue Bridge replacement project, the following closures and traffic pattern changes will be in effect from Friday, April 14 at 7 p.m. through Monday, April 17 at 6 a.m. Please follow signed detours during all closures:

  • Pawtucket Ave. North and South over I-195 at the Pawtucket Ave. Bridge will be closed
  • The Pawtucket Ave. on-ramp to I-195 West will be closed
  • I-195 East and West under Pawtucket Ave., travel lanes reduced from three to two, and all traffic will shift to I-195 East
  • The on-ramp from the East Shore Expressway to I-195 West will be reduced from two lanes to one, and traffic entering I-195 West from the East Shore Expressway will have to yield before entering the highway
  • I-195 East at Exit 7 (East Shore Expressway) will remain open for vehicles in the right travel lane

I-195 East Providence: As part of the Pawtucket Avenue Bridge replacement project, the following traffic pattern changes will be in effect as of Monday, April 17 after the first weekend bridge closure:

  • Pawtucket Ave. North and South over I-195 will have travel lanes reduced from four to two
  • Left turns for Pawtucket Ave. northbound to I-195 West will not be permitted; follow signed detour using Warren Ave.

Interstate Highway Restrictions

Friday Night & Weekend

I-195 East Providence: I-195 East, from Exit 6 (Warren Ave.) to Exit 8 (Rte. 6), alternating lane closures for striping, Friday night, April 21 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day. 

I-95 Richmond/West Greenwich: I-95 North, from Exit 3 (Rte. 138) to Exit 4 (Rte. 3), and at Exit 5B (Rte. 102 North), right shoulder closed in a moving operation for tree trimming and chipping, Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Traffic Pattern Adjustment

I-195 East Providence: On I-195 East, between Exit 6 (Broadway) and the Massachusetts state line, motorists will need to use the far right lane to access Exit 7 (Rte. 114) effective Saturday morning, April 22. The two left lanes will be for I-195 East through traffic only. The right lane also can be used for access to Exit 8 (Warren Ave.) or to continue on I-195 East into Massachusetts.

Temporary Lane Shifts

I-195 Providence: I-195 East and West, between the I-95 interchange and Exit 2 (EB: India St./Gano St.; WB: South Main St.), lanes shift to the left for bridge work.

Temporary Exit & Ramp Closure

I-95 Providence: I-95 South, at Exit 22 (Rtes. 6 & 10/Downtown Providence), exit closed for construction, Wednesday and Thursday nights from midnight to 5 a.m. the follow day. Follow signed detour.

I-195 Providence: I-195 East at Exit 2 (Gano St.), ramp closed for construction, Sunday-Thursday nights from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day. Follow signed detour.

Overnight

I-95 Cranston/Providence: I-95 North, from Elmwood Ave. to Eddy St., alternating lane closures for bridge work, Monday-Thursday nights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.

I-195 East Providence: I-195 East, just east of the Washington Bridge to Broadway, varying lane closures possible for survey work, Sunday night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day..

I-95 Providence: I-95 South, from Exit 23 (Charles St.) to Exit 21 (Atwells Ave.), left lane closed for construction, Wednesday and Thursday nights from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.

I-95 Providence: I-95 South, from Exit 22 (Rtes. 6 & 10/Downtown Providence) to just south of Exit 21 (Atwells Ave.), right lane closed for construction, Sunday-Tuesday nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following day.

I-95 Providence: I-95 South, from Exit 20 (I-195) to Exit 17 (Rte. 1), and I-95 North, from Exit 16 (Rte. 10) to Exit 18 (Thurbers Ave.), alternating lane closures for a bridge inspection, Sunday and Monday nights from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following day.

  • Sunday night: I-95 South
  • Monday night: I-95 North

I-95 Richmond/Hopkinton: I-95 South and North, from Exit 4 (Rte. 3) to the Connecticut state line, right shoulder closures in a moving operation for roadway sweeping, Monday night from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. the following day.

Weekday

I-295 Johnston: I-295 North and South over Rte. 6, left lane closed for survey work, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

I-95 I-195 Providence: I-95 North at Exit 19 (I-195), I-195 East at Exit 2 (Gano St.), and I-195 West, from Exit 2 (South Main St.) to Exit 1A (Point St.), watch for construction activities behind barrier, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

I-95 Providence: I-95 South at Exit 19 (Eddy St.), left lane and shoulder closures on the ramp for a bridge inspection, Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon.

I-195Providence: I-195 West at Exit 3 (Gano St.), partial right lane closure on the ramp for wheelchair ramp installation, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

I-95 Richmond: I-95 North, from Exit 3 (Rte. 138) to Exit 4 (Rte. 3), right shoulder closed in a moving operation for tree trimming, Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

I-95 Richmond: I-95 North and South, on the Baker Pines Bridge over Rte. 3 (Nooseneck Hill Rd.), alternating lane closures for survey work, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ongoing Restriction

I-95 Exeter/Richmond: Watch for construction vehicles exiting and entering the median area along I-95 South after Exit 5 (Rte. 102) at the Tefft Hill Trail Bridge, weekdays from 6 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. through Spring 2017.

138 Newport to North Kingstown: Rte. 138 East and West, from Rte. 1 to the Newport Bridge, and from the Newport Bridge to Admiral Kalfbus Rd., partial right lane closures in a moving operation for striping at the exits and on-ramps, Monday-Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following day.

138 Newport: Rte. 138 East and West at the Newport Bridge approaches/ramps to Admiral Kalfbus Rd., watch for our crews in a moving operation for roadway and sidewalk sweeping and litter removal, Monday night from 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. the following day. Please note: we will also be sweeping Admiral Kalfbus Rd. from 3rd St. to West Main Rd., and from the JT Connell Hwy. Culdesac to Maple Ave.

Rte 4 North Kingstown: Rte. 4 North and South, from I-95 to Rte. 403, lane closures possible for pavement milling, Sunday night: Rte. 4 North from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. and Rte. 4 South from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day, and Monday-Thursday nights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day. Please note: temporary ramp closures at Rte. 4 and Rte. 2, Rte. 4 and Rte. 102, and Rte. 4 and Rte. 401, are also possible Sunday-Thursday nights from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following day. Rte 6 Providence/Johnston: Rte. 6 East, from Plainfield St. to the Broadway ramp, and Rte. 6 West, from Tobey St. to I-295, watch for our crews in a moving operation for roadway sweeping and litter removal, Monday night from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day. Please note: temporary, short-term ramp closures are also possible.

Rte 78 Westerly: Rte. 78 East and West, from the Connecticut state line to Rte. 1, partial right lane closures in a moving operation for striping at the exits and on-ramps, Sunday-Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following day.

Rte 6 Johnston: Rte. 6 East and West, just before and after the I-295 overpass, alternating shoulder closures for a bridge inspection, Monday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Rte 24 Tiverton/Portsmouth: Rte. 24 South, from the old Sakonnet River Bridge to the Hummocks Ave. Bridge, right lane closed for construction, Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Rte 1 Westerly: Rte. 1 South, from Dunns Corner Rd. to Rte. 78, right shoulder closed for drainage work, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Friday Night

North Providence: Centerdale Bypass, from just south of Mineral Spring Ave. to Waterman Ave., lane closures possible for milling, Thursday night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day. Expect delays.

Rte 44 Providence: Rte. 44 (Smith St.) North and South at the Smith St. Bridge, between Gaspee St./State St. and Canal St., one lane of alternating traffic for bridge work, Monday night from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day. Delays anticipated.

Providence: Exchange Terrace at Memorial Blvd, one lane open in each direction for milling and paving, Sunday-Thursday nights from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day. Noise anticipated.

Providence: Francis St., from Exchange Terrace to Memorial Blvd. and at its intersection with the Rte. 6/I-95 ramps, lane closures possible for construction, Monday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Rte 44 Providence: Rte. 44 (Smith St.) East and West, from Lyndhurst Ave. to Chalkstone Ave., shoulder closures possible for construction, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parking may be prohibited within the construction zone.

Providence: North Main St. North, from College St. to Smith St., lane and shoulder closures possible for construction, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m

Providence: Lane closures and intermittent traffic stoppages are possible for construction on the following roads: Promenade St. at Pleasant Valley Parkway, and Dean St., and Kinsley Ave., Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additionally, during that same time period, the lane from Kinsley Ave. to Providence Place may be closed. Traffic should follow the detour from Dean St. (South) to West Exchange St. to Sabin St., back to West Exchange St. and then to Dean St. (North).

Ongoing Restriction

Rte 44 Providence: Rte. 44 (Smith St.) East, from Gaspee St. to Canal St., right lane and sidewalk closures for barrier placement through Spring 2017.

112 Richmond/Charlestown: Rte. 112 North and South, from Rte. 91 to Shannock Hill Rd./Pine Hill Rd., alternating one-way traffic with a right shoulder closure for construction, Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Westerly: Canal St. under the Varietyville Road Bridge, from Yankee Dr. to Perkins Ave., lane and shoulder closures possible for bridge work, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

102 West Greenwich: At the Rte. 102 (Victory Hwy.) on-ramp to I-95 North, right shoulder closed for drainage work, Monday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

West Bay

Extended Lane Closures

Warwick: Effective Thursday, April 13, just before the Toll Gate Rd. (South)/Veterans Memorial Dr. Extension (West) roundabout, left lanes closed for concrete crosswalk installation just prior to and through the roundabout.  This operation is anticipated to last through Monday, April 24. It will then switch to the right lane through Monday, May 1. Expect delays, and seek alternate routes, if possible.

Warwick
: Centerville Rd. (both eastbound and westbound) left lanes closed due to concrete crosswalk installation/pavement curing just prior to and through the roundabout.  This operation is anticipated to last through Monday, April 24. It will then switch to the right lane through Monday, May 1. Expect delays, and seek alternate routes, if possible.

Warwick: At Veterans Memorial Dr. Extension (eastbound) there is a left lane closure expected due to concrete crosswalk installation/pavement curing just prior to Meadow St.  This operation is anticipated to last through Monday, April 24. It will then switch to the right lane through Monday, May 1. Expect delays, and seek alternate routes, if possible.

Warwick: Effective Monday, April 24, westbound travel on West Shore Rd. toward Post Rd. northbound will experience a lane shift due to concrete crosswalk installation/pavement curing just prior to the roundabout.  Motorists will travel around a concrete island but continue to remain to the right of the roundabout just as traffic does today.  Please use caution and follow the traffic setup that will be in place.  This work will also cause left lanes closures on Post Rd. (southbound) and Post Rd. village (eastbound) just prior to and through the roundabout.  This operation is anticipated to last through Monday, May 1.  Expect delays, and seek alternate routes, if possible.

Temporary Road Closure

117 Warwick: Rte. 117 (Centerville Rd.), east of Meadow St. to Post Rd., remains closed to through traffic for construction.  Local traffic access will be maintained to the businesses. Please note: pavement placement is scheduled for Sunday and Monday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day. Use caution when traveling through the area.

Warwick: Coronado Rd. East and West, from Rte. 1 (Post Rd.) to Jefferson Blvd., road closed for excavation and paving, Sunday-Tuesday nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day. Follow signed detour

Overnight

Rte 2 East Greenwich: Rte. 2 (South County Trail) North and South, at the South County Trail Bridge, one lane of alternating traffic for bridge work, Tuesday night from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day. Delays anticipated

Rte 5 Warwick: Rte. 5 (Greenwich Ave.), from Post Rd. to Veterans Memorial Dr., lane closures possible for construction, Sunday and Monday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.

Warwick: Post Rd., from Water St. to Apponaug Four Corners, lane closures possible for construction, Sunday and Monday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.

Weekday

Warwick: Apponaug Four Corners at Centerville Rd. and Post Rd., lane shifts for construction, Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Warwick:
Post Rd. Village, from Colonial Ave. to Prospect St., one lane closed, with shoulder closures also possible for construction, Monday-Friday anticipated from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Parking may also be impacted within the construction zone.

Warwick: Coronado Rd. East and West, from Rte. 1 (Post Rd.) to Jefferson Blvd., lane closures possible for construction, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Continuing

Rte 2 Warwick: Rte. 2 North, from Rhode Island Mall to the I-295 overpass, left lane closed for bridge work through Summer 2017.

117 Warwick: Rte. 117 (Centerville Rd.), from Meadow St./Burger King to Post Rd. (Apponaug Four Corners), Eastbound and Westbound traffic are now using the Veterans Memorial Dr. Extension.  Centerville Rd. is closed to thru traffic from Post Rd. to Meadow St. Please note: access to/from businesses is maintained.

Warwick: A temporary traffic signal has been activated at the Metro Center Blvd. Bridge carrying Metro Center Blvd. over the Airport Connector. With this activation, the detour has been removed. Motorists will now experience one lane of alternating traffic, and possible delays, through Spring 2017.

Warwick: Airport Connector East at the Jefferson Blvd. off-ramp, lanes shifted to the high speed lane, with all exits open. Westbound traffic will continue through the current configuration through Spring 2017.
