Interstate Highway Restrictions

I-295/Rte. 6 Bridge Rehabilitation (Johnston)

I-295

  • Closure of the southbound through lanes. Through traffic will utilize the new bridges on the service road.
  • Access will be maintained for ramps to Rte. 6 West to Hartford, Conn. (Exit 9C) and Rte. 6 East to Providence (Exit 9A).
  • The on-ramp from Hartford Ave./Rte. 6A West to I-295 South will remain closed.

Rte. 6 and Rte. 6A (Hartford Ave.)

  • Lane closed on the ramp from Rte. 6 West to I-295 North
  • Lane closures possible on both Rte. 6 and Rte. 6A at the I-295 overpasses
  • On-ramp closed from Rte. 6A West to I-295 South. Left turns permitted for nearby on-ramp normally used by Rte. 6A East traffic.

New Traffic Pattern

Providence: The I-95 North off-ramp to Rte. 146 North at Exit 23, a new traffic pattern will be in place until mid-Fall, and will change when all lanes shift to the right for the last phase of construction. Final completion of the project is scheduled for Fall 2020.

Providence:  I-95 North, from Exit 18 to Exit 19, left lane closed, and I-95 South, from I-195 on-ramp to Thurbers Ave. off-ramp, right shoulder closed for construction, Sun., 7 a.m.-11 a.m.

Overnight

East Providence/Providence: I-195, from I-95 interchange to Mass. line, partial left and right lane closures in a moving operation for exit renumbering, Mon.-Thurs. nights, 9 p.m.-5 a.m. 

Pawtucket:
I-95, from Mass. line to Exit 29, Exit 30 southbound and the on-ramp to I-95 North from Fountain St., alternating lane closures and ramp narrowed for construction, Tues.-Thurs. nights, 8 p.m.-4 a.m. 


Providence:
I-95 South, from exit 20 to Exit 18, alternating lane closures for pothole patching, Wed. night, 9 p.m.-6 a.m.

Providence: I-95, from Industrial Dr. to Smithfield Ave., alternating lane closures for construction, Mon.-Thurs. nights, 9 p.m.-5 a.m.

Warwick:
I-295 North, from I-295 to Exit 1A, right lane closed for maintenance, Mon. night, 9:30 p.m.-6 a.m.

Warwick: I-95 North, at the Greenwich Ave. Bridge, left lane closed for construction, Wed.-Thurs. nights, 9 p.m.-6 a.m.

Warwick: I-95, under the Rte. 37 Bridges including northbound ramp, left and right lane closed for construction, Mon-Tues. nights, 7 p.m.-5 a.m.

East Providence: I-195 West, at the Pawtucket Ave. Bridge, center lane closed for pothole patching, Thurs., 5 a.m.-6 a.m.

East Providence/Providence: I-195, at the I-195 and I-95 interchange, from Exit 19 on I-95 to Mass. line on I-195, left lane closed in a moving operation for litter clean-up, Thurs., 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Pawtucket: I-95, from Mass. line to Exit 29, including Exit 30, right lane closed and ramp narrowed for construction, Mon.-Fri., 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Pawtucket/Providence: I-95, from Exit 16 to Mass. line, left lane closed in a moving operation for litter clean-up, Thurs., 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Richmond: I-95 North, from Exit 3 to Exit 5, right lane closed for construction, Wed., 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Richmond: I-95, at Exit 3A and 3B, ramp narrowed for construction, Mon.-Fri., 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Warwick: I-95 North, from Exit 14 to Exit 16, right lane closed, and from Exit 14 to Exit 15 Access Rd., left lane closed for electrical work, Mon., 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Ongoing Traffic Patterns

Cumberland: I-295, from Exit 20 to Exit 22, lane shifts to the right, with only two lanes of travel open in each direction for bridge work through Spring 2020.

Hopkinton/Richmond: I-95, from Exit 2 to Exit 3, lane shifts for bridge work through June 2020.

  • Two northbound lanes will be shift to the left from the exterior to the median area

Providence/East Providence: Lane shifts are in place on I-195 West, from just after Broadway to the Washington Bridge, and I-195 East, from Pawtucket Ave. to the Mass. line.

6/10 Interchange Project (Providence)

Rte. 6

  • Rte. 6 East, all traffic shifted onto the existing Rte. 6 West roadway just after the Hartford Ave. exit. Lanes are narrow.
  • The Broadway off ramp is closed.
  • Rte. 6 East towards Rte. 10 North, left lane closed for a bridge inspection, Sun. night, 9 p.m.-3 a.m.
  • Rte. 6 West, from Rte. 10 interchange to Hartford Ave., Mon.-Fri., 7 a.m.-2 p.m.

Rte. 10

  • Rte. 10 North, from Union Ave. to the Tobey St. overpass, lane shift in place for through traffic and the Westminster St. off-ramp.
  • Rte. 10 North, from Union Ave. to Broadway, right lane closed for a bridge inspection, Sun. night, 9 p.m.-3 a.m.
  • Rte. 10 South, from the Rte. 10 South and Rte. 6 West split to the Rte. 6 East and Rte. 10 South on-ramp, road closed for a bridge inspection, Mon. night, 9 p.m.-3 a.m.  Follow signed detour.
  • Rte. 10, from Union Ave. to Tobey St., left lane closed for construction, Mon.-Thurs. nights, 8 p.m.-6 a.m.

6/10 Connector

  • On Connector outbound a new lane split is in place for Rte. 10 South and Route 6 West, one-half mile before its original location. Lanes are narrow.

Affected City Streets

  • Traffic from the Tobey St./Harris Ave. on-ramp does not have direct access to Rte. 10 South. Follow detour signs.
  • Traffic shifted on the Broadway and Westminster St. bridges over the highway.

Project-wide

  • Periodic one-lane closures possible along Rte. 10 and Rte. 6 on off-peak hours Monday-Friday.

New Traffic Pattern

Providence: A new traffic pattern is in place on Rte. 6, from Hartford Ave. to Killingly St. All lanes shift to the left and one of the three lanes will be closed for bridge construction through Spring 2021.

Charlestown/South Kingstown: Rte. 1 South, from Falcone Ln. to Matunuck Beach Rd., left lane closed for maintenance, Wed. night, 9 p.m.-6 a.m.

Cranston/Providence: Rte. 10, from Park Ave. to Rte. 6, partial left and right lane closures in a moving operation for exit renumbering, Mon.-Thurs. nights, 9 p.m.-5 a.m. 

Cranston/Warwick: Rte. 37, from Post Rd. to Natick Ave., partial left and right lane closures in a moving operation for exit renumbering, Mon.-Thurs. nights, 9 p.m.-5 a.m.

Johnston: Rte. 6 West, from I-295 North on-ramp to I-295 South on-ramp, lane shifted for sign work, Thurs. night, 8 p.m.-6 a.m.

Lincoln/North Smithfield/Smithfield: Rte. 146, from Rte. 99 to Rte. 146A, alternating lane closures in a moving operation for pothole patching, Wed. night, 9 p.m.-7 a.m.

North and South Kingstown: Rte. 1, from Rte. 4 to the Gov’t Center, alternating lane closures in a moving operation for pothole patching, Wed. night, 11 p.m.-6 a.m.

Portsmouth: Rte. 24 South, at the Turnpike Ave. off-ramp, exit closed for maintenance, Wed. night, 9 p.m.-5 a.m.  Follow signed detour.

Weekday

East Greenwich: Rte. 4 South, from I-95 exit to Exit 8, and Rte. 4 North, from Exit 8A to Exit 8B, right shoulder closed for utility work, Wed., 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Lincoln: Rte. 146 South, at Rte. 116, left lane closed for construction, Tues.-Fri., 9 a.m.- 1p.m.

Providence: Rte. 6, from Memorial Blvd. to Rte. 10, left lane closed in a moving operation for litter clean-up, Thurs., 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Extended Lane Closures

Providence: Lane closures possible for bridge construction on Providence Place and Promenade St., at their intersection with Park Place and the rear entrance to Providence Place Mall, Mon.-Fri., 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Overnight

Cranston: on-ramp from Plainfield Pike (Rte. 14) towards I-295 North will be closed for construction, Thurs., 1 a.m.-7 a.m.

Providence: Smith St. West, from Academy Ave. to Gentian Ave., partial right lane closure in a moving operation for drainage work, Mon. night, 9 p.m.-5:30 a.m.

Providence: Branch Ave., from the ramp to I-95 South to the ramp to I-95 North, two eastbound lanes closed and one lane open in each direction on the westbound side for bridge work, Mon.-Thurs. nights, 7 p.m.-6 a.m.
