Interstate Highway Restrictions

I-295/Rte. 6 Bridge Rehabilitation

As part of the I-295/Rte. 6 Bridge rehabilitation project, motorists are experiencing the following changes:

I-295 North and Rte. 6 West:

  • Closure of the northbound service road. Access maintained to Exits 9A and 9C. Follow signed detour.
  • Closure of Exit 9B. Follow signed detour.
  • Lane restrictions from two to one on the ramp from Rte. 6 West to I-295 North. Delays anticipated.

I-295 South, Rte. 6 East and Rte. 6A (Hartford Ave.):

  • Closure of the southbound service road.  Access maintained to Exits 9C and 9A. Follow signed detour.
  • Minor delays anticipated on ramp from Rte. 6 East to I-295 South given closure of southbound service road.
  • Closure of on-ramp from Hartford Ave. West to I-295 South. Left turn access off Hartford Ave. to I-295 South used by Hartford Ave. East traffic.

Please note: At the new traffic pattern on I-295 South, make sure you stay on the highway for Exit 9A for Route 6 to Providence. Don't take the first exit (9C), which is now Hartford Avenue only.

Temporary Exit Closure

Providence/East Providence: As part of ongoing repairs to the Washington Bridge Westbound, Exit 3 (Gano St.) off of I-195 West is closed through Fall 2019. Follow signed detour.

Overnight

Cranston: I-95 North and South, from Exit 16 (Elmwood Ave.) North and Exit 16B (Elmwood Ave.) South to Huntington Viaduct Bridge, alternating lane closures for bridge painting, Sun.-Thurs. nights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Please note: the following access roads and ramps will be temporarily closed during this operation, Sun.-Thurs. nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.: Access Rd. off I-95 South at Exit 16B; the ramp from I-95 South to Rte. 10 South toward Rte. 12 (Park Ave.); and the on-ramp from Rte. 10 North to I-95 South. Cumberland: I-295 North and South, between Exit 20 and Exit 22, lane shifts to the right for bridge work and striping, Tues.-Thurs. nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.  Weather permitting.

Providence: I-95 North and South, from Exit 22 to Exit 24, alternating lane closures for bridge work, Mon.-Thurs. nights from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Warwick: I-95 North and South, from Cowesett Rd. Overpass to Exit 12, left lane and shoulder closures for temporary barrier installation, Mon.-Thurs. nights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

West Greenwich: I-95 North and South, between Exit 5A and Exit 5B, alternating lane closures for bridge work Mon.-Thurs. nights from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Weekday

Johnston: I-295 South, from the Rte. 6 interchange to Scituate Ave., right shoulder closed for construction, Mon.-Fri. from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Warwick: I-95 North, from the Airport Connector to the Rte. 10 overpass, left lane and shoulder closures for light pole work, Wed. from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Ongoing Traffic Patterns

Providence/East Providence: Lane shifts are in place on I-195 West, from just after Broadway to the Washington Bridge, and I-195 East, from Pawtucket Ave. to the Mass. line.

Other Limited Access Highway Restrictions

6/10 Interchange Project

As part of the 6/10 Interchange Reconstruction Project, motorists are experiencing the following changes:

  • Rte. 6 East, all traffic shifted to the left just after the Hartford Ave. exit. Both eastbound and westbound lanes are narrowed and located on the westbound side of the highway.
  • Rte. 6 East at Broadway, exit closed for construction for approximately 24 months. Follow signed detour.
  • Rte. 10 North, from Union Ave. to the Tobey St. overpass, traffic shifts to the temporary Rte. 10 North and temporary Westminster St. ramp for approximately 24 months.
  • Traffic shifts to the right on Rte. 6 West, from the Tobey St. overpass to Hartford Ave. for approximately 12 months.
  • Traffic shifts on Broadway, from Barton St. to Olneyville Square for approximately 12 months.
  • Traffic shifts on the Broadway and Westminster Street bridges over the highway

The lane split on the Rte. 6/10 Connector outbound has shifted one-half mile to the north of its current location. Also, traffic from the Tobey St./Harris Ave. on-ramp does not have direct access to Rte. 10 South and needs to follow a detour using Rte. 6 West.

Daytime work anticipated behind barrier at the 6/10 Interchange.

Overnight Temporary Road Closure

Johnston: Rte. 6 East and West at the on- and off-ramps to I-295, road closed for bridge demolition, Sun.-Thurs. nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Please note: only one direction of travel will be closed at a time. Follow signed detour.

Rte. 146 North Smithfield: Rte. 146 North, from the Forestdale Bridge to the Old Great Rd. Bridge, alternating lane closures for striping, Mon. night from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Weather permitting.

Weekday

Rte. 146 North Smithfield: Rte. 146 South, from the Forestdale Bridge to the Old Great Rd. Bridge, alternating lane closures for milling and striping, Mon.-Wed. from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Delays possible.

Rte. 146 North Smithfield: Rte. 146 South, at the Pound Hill Bridge, watch out for crews working behind the barrier for bridge work, Mon.-Fri. from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Rte. 146 Smithfield/Lincoln: Rte. 146 North and South, fromRte 146A to the Mass. line, right lane and shoulder closures for sign work, Mon.-Fri. form 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Continuing

Lincoln/Cumberland: Rte. 99 South, on the ramp to Route 146 South, left lane closed with all traffic shifted to the right.  Crews are working weekdays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Temporary Ramp Closures

Temporary Bridge Closure

Providence: The Bath St. East Bridge, which spans the Woonasquatucket River and carries two-way traffic between Kinsley Ave./Providence Place and Promenade St., is currently closed. Get Detour Maps »

Temporary Road Closures

Providence: Blackstone St. East and West, from Allens Ave. to Eddy St., is currently closed. Local access to the Women and Infants Breast Health Ctr. will be maintained. Get Detour Map »

Providence: Dorrance St., east of Dyer St. will be closed for construction through June 2019.

Cranston: Wellington Ave. North and South under the Wellington Ave. Bridge, one lane closed with alternating traffic for bridge work, Sun.-Thurs. nights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Providence: Elmwood Avenue North and South, under the Elmwood Ave. Bridge, alternating lane closures for bridge work, Sun.-Thurs. nights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Cranston: Rte. 14 (Plainfield Pike) East, from Sailor Way to the I-295 north on-ramp, right lane closed for bridge work, Mon.-Fri. from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Johnston: Rte. 6A (Hartford Ave.) East and West at the I-295 interchange, alternating lane closures for bridge work, Mon.-Fri. from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • Rte. 6A East: Mon.-Fri. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Rte. 6A West: Mon.-Fri. from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Providence: Oxford St. East and West under I-95, from Eddy St. to Allens Ave., alternating sidewalk closures for bridge work, Mon.-Fri. from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please note: if work is not completed during the day, one of the sidewalks may remain closed overnight.

Providence: Rte. 44 (Smith St.) East and West, from Holden St. to Francis St., and Park St. North and South, from Hayes St. to Smith St., alternating one-way traffic with right lane and shoulder closures for survey work, Mon.-Fri. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

East Providence: The left lane of the East Shore Expressway is currently closed through Summer 2019.

Temporary Bridge Closure

Cumberland: The Town-owned Howard Rd. Bridge, which carries Howard Rd. over Abbott Run, is currently closed. Please follow signed detour via Abbot Run Valley Rd. in Cumberland or from Paine Rd. in Massachusetts. More information is available here

Cumberland: Old Diamond Hill Rd., from Home Ave. to Diamond Hill Rd., is currently closed to motorists to become a walkable path as part of the Diamond Hill Road project.

Charlestown/Richmond: Motorists are experiencing an alternating one-way traffic pattern controlled by temporary traffic signals, for bridge work, 24 hours a day on Rte. 112 North and South, from Butter Lane to Carolina Mill Lane. Expect delays.

Hopkinton: Motorists are experiencing an alternating one-way traffic pattern controlled by a temporary traffic signal for bridge work 24 hours per day on Mechanic St. North and South, under the I-95 overpass.

Hopkinton/Richmond: Rte. 91 (Church St.) East and West at the Wood River Bridge, shoulder closures with a double lane shift for bridge work, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through Fall 2018.

West Greenwich:
Rte. 3 East and West, from Burnt Sawmill Rd. to Kitts Corner Rd., travel lanes reduced from 4 to 2 and eastbound and westbound traffic shifted to the west side of the Big River Bridge for construction through December 2018.

West Greenwich: Rte. 102 (Victory Hwy.) North and South, over I-95 at the Victory Hwy. Bridge, lane shift and shoulder closures remain in place for construction, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
