The Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacon (RRFB) is a modern pedestrian activated flashing beacon that enhances safety for people crossing a road, particularly those that have higher speeds and multiple lanes. RIDOT has installed more than 40 RRFBs statewide so far. The signal is an on-demand system. When activated by a pedestrian or cyclist, an alternating yellow signal flashes, helping to catch the attention of drivers that someone is crossing the road.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, RRFBs can reduce pedestrian crashes by up to 47 percent and boost the rate by which drivers stop by up to 98 percent.
RIDOT has installed RRFBs in places commonly used by foot traffic that require more than just a striped crosswalk, such as near schools, bike paths, and higher-speed roadways. RIDOT installs these proactively based on a variety of factors, including traffic volume, travel speeds limits and other information. RIDOT also installs these devices in response to requests made to the State Traffic Commission.
